Japanese labels with Hand-Made Packaging
« on: October 07, 2008, 07:17:19 AM »
Hi, I run a small label in the USA www.thetableofcontents.com and I'm making a small book on labels that hand-make all of their releases.

Can anyone recommend some labels (preferably Japanese labels) that hand-make their packaging for their releases?

I can think of some miniature labels in Osaka!

i)   Augen / Hören
ii)  Noctovision
iii)  Oz Disc

however, not exclusively “hand-made” labels….just some releases

V.A. + 山本精一 (Seiichi Yamamoto &al.)
「水道メガネ殺人事件」(Suido Megane Satsujin Jiken) “The Murder Case of the Water Service Spectacles” / “The Murder Case of the Waterworks Eyeglasses”
Augen / Hören, ME-001, VHS, 1994年, 45分

A live performance document of pseudo-vaudevillian noise and other underground (Jon The Dog – type)kookiness with some cryptic references to water, ‘Singin’ in the Rain’ or some scene from ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’, I forget exactly… packaged in junk including cassettes, CDs, advertising, 7" records, chopsticks, cloth, coin, Q-tip, &c. Officially, not recommended to serious music connoisseurs(!)

Vance Orchestra
“At Random Again”
Noctovision, NCVCD 09, CD (CD+CDr version, OOP), 2000年

This label not unlike Alchemy Records in Osaka (but much smaller) with connections to the dozen or so exponents of the original Japanese Noise music scene.
During the last two decades, Noctovision (born out of  Les Disques du Soleil, Osaka) have released a dozen recordings on odd years with odd catalogue numbers.
Their concern pertains very much to the ambient elements of Current 93 / Coil / Nurse With Wound in that these recordings are for the most part from European artists.
It was proposed that the even numbers would provide for sound art of another aesthetic …
In 2007, artists of The Loop Orchestra presented a broadcast about this label.

Regarding the hand-made CD, it consists of newspaper collages..

V.A.
“Buy or Die”
Oz Disc, OZD-012, CD?, 1995年, 0分 (sic)

Lastly, the bizarre (“idiot label” qv. Stofer: ‘Japanese Independent Music’) Oz Disc!
I think “Buy or Die”  was originally a series, superseded by this condensed ‘version’.
To obtain, firstly, you had to go to visit the outlet, select your cover (eg. the zapping robot is only one) and then you state your price and pay!

For other ‘hand-made’ Japanese CDs one might consider some works of:
M.S.B.R. / 田野幸治   and   AUBE / 中嶋昭文.

In America though, a ltd. ed. 4-volume series of field recordings, son verite, found sound with collage design not unlike the Noctovision item: http://www.soundsfromthepocket.com/found.htm
